Having contributed several articles to the Encyclop-édie, Watelet began work on a dictionary of painting, sculpture and engraving. After his death his friends printed the articles up to 'Conférence' thinking that the rest of the work was also finished and ready for publication, which it was not. The completion of the Dictionnaire was undertaken by the etcher, Pierre Charles Levesque (1736--1812) and is his best known work.
