WEIBEL, Samuel (1771--1846)
[8], 90, [2] p., hand-coloured aquatint frontis., [1] engr. map, [14] hand-coloured aquatint pl., [14] etched pl. ; 34.5 cm. (4º)

The artist's name appears on the frontispiece. Issued with a duplicate set of the plates in their etched state before the addition of aquatint. Weibel produced a series of 14 etchings, to which was added an etched title-plate (and descriptive text) by Balthasar Anton Dünker (1746--1806), probably for publication in the mid-late 1790s. The copperplates (and an unknown quantity of impressions) passed into the trade; the coppers, being almost certainly worm, were then 'freshened up' for this publication by the trimming of plate margins, the addition of aquatint shading, and the addition of hand colouring. This process would have enabled Treuttel & Würtz to maximise their investment by offering to the likes of Soane what appears on the surface to be an entirely new work, complete with highly desirable proofs of the plates in their etched state - these being in fact no more than unsold impressions of the existing state of the plates. This was a favourite way to attract buyers looking for 'fine' impressions, for which of course a much higher price could be asked. The 33% discount that Soane (or someone, at least) succeeded in getting, suggests however that not everyone was fooled!

Copy Notes Bought from T. & W. Boone for £3 15s., 1 May 1823, the price possibly including the binding 'Calf extra Gilt Leaves'. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.5.5). Inscribed in pencil on verso of front free-endpaper £6.6- sewed and 4-4-0.
