London (Place), [1829].
[4] p. ; 22.3 cm. (4º)

Lithographed covering letter, verso of p.[1] and conjugate leaf blank. Bearing the printed facsimile signatures of Raphael L. West and his brother Benjamin West junior. Dated April 29th 1829, the day being inserted in MS. as is the address to Sir at the head of the letter.

Copy Notes Oddly enough, this copy of the Wests' letter (which was clearly intended to accompany 'advance' copies of the sale catalogue of 181 paintings auctioned by George Robins at West's former home in Newman Street on 22-25 May 1829) is addressed to Martin Archer Shee Esqr. The anomaly is partially explained perhaps by the absence of the catalogue itself from Soane's Library, suggesting that Shee may have lent Soane his copy with this letter loosely inserted. Certainly it is not difficult to imagine how Soane might have subsequently mistaken Shee's letter for part of his own correspondence, endorsing it on the verso 1829 / 29 April / From Messrs West / 132.

Binding Folded bifolium.

Reference Number 3565
