Wheler was a Stratford antiquary and friend of Soane's close friend and fellow Shakespeare enthusiast John Britton. The aquatint plates by F. Eginton from drawings by the author are dated 1806. With a long list of subscribers (pp. [211]--229) in which Soane's name, however, does not appear.
