First edition. The author's purpose when he began this project in 1802 was to refute the hypothesis accepted by the Society of Antiquaries that Gothic architecture originated in Britain. At his death in 1807 the work was only two thirds finished. The important final part in which he proposed to state his opinion on the origin of the Gothic style was in too incomplete a state to be published with the first two parts. The preface concerning the work and its author was provided by his Cambridge friend and travelling companion, George Hamilton Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen (1784--1860) who was a member of the "Committee for the Inspection of Models for National Monuments" which was placed in charge of the restoration of Henry VII's Chapel at Westminster Abbey in 1807, and subsequently was president of the Society of Antiquaries (1812--46). A 'Second Edition' appeared in 1811, in fact a reprint in royal octavo format to complement Milner's A treatise on the ecclesiastical architecture of England (q.v.) which had been published earlier in 1811 and attempted to refute Whittington's thesis that the Gothic arrived in France from the East before its appearance in England. See notes to BAL, Early printed books, no. 3626 (describing the 2nd ed., 1811).
