Issued probably in four fascicles of five plates each with accompanying letterpress between mid-1827 and February 1828, the date of the letterpress dedication to John Capel, M.P. is signed and dated 'Geo. Wightwick. London, February 1828'. Lithographed title arranged between Trajan's column and Column of Antoninus with centre-piece vignette of remains of Temple of Jupiter Stator. The plates are based on drawings made by Wightwick during a visit to Italy in 1825--26. After returning from his travels, Wightwick was briefly employed by Soane in 1826--27 as an amanuensis and companion. His Select views was evidently published in the hopes of attracting architectural commissions, but he failed in this. See A.T. Bolton, Portrait of Sir John Soane, pp. 393--413; Howard Colvin, A biographical dictionary of British architects 1699--1840, 4th ed. (New Haven and London 2008), p. 1116. BAL, Early printed books, no. 3636.
