Wilde, Jacob de (1645--1725?) - Art collections
Signa antiqua e museo Jacobi de Wilde veterum poetarum carminibus illustrata et per Mariam filiam aeri inscripta.
Amstelaedami (Place), sumptibus auctoris,, 1700.
[14] p., add. etch. t.-pl., etch. port., [61] pl. (1 fold.); 23.0 cm. (4o)

The text consists of a title-leaf with etched vignette, a single-leaf address by Jacob de Wilde, and five leaves of laudatory verse. The plates illustrating statuettes in De Wilde's collection are numbered I--LX, in addition to which there is an added title-plate, a portrait of Maria de Wilde, and a double-page view of the 'Mvsevm Wildianvm'. In the present copy, the text and plates of Signa antiqua have been bound with a set of the plates only of the same author's Gemmae selectae antiquae, Amsterdam, 1703 (q.v.). It is just possible that this copy of the Signa antiqua represents a genuine variant issue, perhaps dating from before 1703, though no similar copy has been traced. The British Library has both works complete and bound together (shelfmark 787.k.17). There was also a Selecta numismata antiqua (Amsterdam, the author, 1692) devoted to the same museum.

Copy Notes Bound (1) with the plates from Wilde's Gemmae selectae antiquae, 1703 (q.v.). Bought from Thomas Boone on 16 June 1818. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.3.9). Price pencilled on front pastedown 8s 6d.

Binding C18th mottled half calf, gilt-ruled spine, gilt spine-title 'J: De Wild:/ Antiquitat'. Boards decorated to imitate sprinkled calf.

Reference Number 3592

Additional Names Thomas Boone; Wilde, Maria de (b.$1682); Wilde, Jacob de (1645--1725?) - Art collections
