WILKINS, William (1778--1839)
[Antiquities of Magna Graecia]
The antiqvities of Magna Graecia. By William Wilkins, Jun. M.A. F.A.S.
Cambridge (Place), printed at the University Press, by Richard Watts; and published by Longman, Hurst, Orme and Rees, London,, 1807.
[6], xxii, 74, [2] p., 10, [1], 22, 11, 5, 20, 4 [i.e. 73] pl. (some aquat.) ; [15] engr. illus. ; 59.8 cm. (2°)

There are a total of 73 plates numbered according to the chapter they illustrate; the views are rendered in aquatint and printed in sepia. the work is modelled on the first three volumes of Stuart and Revett's Antiquities of Athens (q.v.), and is based on drawings made by Wilkins during his Mediterranean tour of 1801--1803. It was an influential contribution to the Greek Revival. Shortly after it was published Robert Mylne hinted in a note to Soane that he thought Wilkins had borrowed heavily from Andrea Pigonati's Stato presente degli antichi monumenti siciliani, 1767 (q.v.) and another work, but there is no evidence to support his assertion. See A.T. Bolton (ed.), The portrait of Sir John Soane, R.A. (London 1927), p. 135 n.2. The publication price was 10 guineas (see binding description below), but the Abbey catalogue notes that Priestley and Weale bought the copyright and sold it in boards for 8 guineas in 1821. Soane was not among the original subscribers. BAL, Early printed books, no. 3651; Abbey, Travel 128.

(Spiers Box. Purchases through personal friends). Titles of some plates supplied in MS. and some marginal notes in pencil, possibly in George Bailey's hand.
