Written in 1760, augmented and published by the author in 1762 as Anmerkungen über die Baukunst der Alten. Also incorporated as 'Observations sur l'architecture des anciens' in Winckelmann's Histoire de l'art chez les anciens, Paris, 1793, vol. II, p. 517--681 (q.v.), a French translation of the Geschichte der Kunst des Alterthums. Brunet attributes the present translation to H.J. Jansen (1741--1812), editor of the 1793 text, but that is largely a revision of the translation of Michel Huber (1727--1804) published with the title Histoire de l'art de l'antiquité, Leipzig, 1781 (q.v.), and Huber may also have been responsible for the present text. The half-title verso advertises other works by Winckelmann published and 'Sous Presse' by Barrois aíné. With a list of errata on p. 140.
