Fredericksen (Index of paintings, III, p. 94, no.1338) identifies the vendor as Charles Wyatt, M.P., the nephew of the architect James Wyatt, from whose collection some of the paintings in this sale had been bought on 10 June 1814 (H. Phillips, posthumous house contents sale at 1, Foley Place, London, 6--11 June 1814 - see ibid., III, p. 70, no.1198). Soane paid £18 10s. for B. Solvyns's Collection of coloured etchings descriptive of the manners, customs, and dresses of the Hindoos, Calcutta, 1799 (q.v.), complete 'With a Catalogue' (q.v.) on the third day's sale. (See Priv. Corr.XVI.E.3.2). Charles Wyatt had almost certainly acquired this work during his army service in Calcutta, where he had been responsible for designing a new Government House for the Marquess Wellesley between 1798 and 1803.
