AN ACCOUNT OF FORT-MONTAGUE ...
An account of Fort-Montague, at Knaresborough; in a letter from a gentleman, at Harrogate, to his friend, in London, ...
Knaresborough printed by Hargrove and Sons; and sold by Governor Hill, [1812?].
8 p. : wd-engr. illus. ; 15.5 cm. (8°)

Anonymous. ESTC lists two variants, one with the imprint reading 'Printed by Brodbelt, Kraresbrugh [sic]. Sold by Governor Hill,...' and the pagination as above (ESTC 23229) and the other printed for Hill by George Wilson, with the final page unnumbered (ESTC t183332). Both are undated, with a publication year of 1791 suggested on internal evidence. The two copies in the Soane Museum, which are printed on green paper, have a colophon reading 'Knaresborough: Printed by Hargrove And Sons, Of whom may be had the Harrogate Guide, or History of the Castle, Town, and Forest of Knaresborough, Sixth Edition, Plates, 6s. and a Week at Harrogate, a Poem, price 2s. 6d., with a neat Frontispiece.' The sixth edition of The history of the castle, town, and forest of Knaresborough was published by Hargrave in 1809, and A week at Harrogate, sometimes attributed to Barbara Hofland (not to be confused with her A season at Harrogate, q.v., published in the same year), was published in 1812, suggesting a publication date after 1811 for the pamphlet. In his biography of Barbara Hofland, a close friend of Soane's who contributed text to the third of his Descriptions of his house and museum, Denis Butts finds no evidence of her authorship of either work, suggesting that at least one of the copies of An account of Fort-William may simply be a souvenir of Soane's visit to Harrogate with Mrs Hofland in 1816. See D. Butts, Mistress of our tears: a literary and bibliographical study of Barbara Hofland (Aldershot: Scolar Press, 1992), pp. 99--101; A.T. Bolton (ed.), The portrait of Sir John Soane, R.A. (London 1927), pp. 228--230.
