The relationship of this copy of the work to the other two copies in the Soane Museum (q.v.) is not clear; it appears to be a copy of the first edition printed on paper bearing the same watermark, but with the letterpress reset line-for-line. This is chiefly detectable by the offset location of the signatures compared to the other two copies, with sig. B under the letters 'te' rather than 'iv', sig. C under 'e ' rather than 'n ', etc.
Copy Notes Plate V, the plan of the palace, is inscribed by Soane with the names of rooms given in the explanation. Earlier library shelfmarks in ink on verso of front free-endpaper Shelf M7 122. Purchases of two copies are recorded in the Soane archive: one from Haywood for £2 13s. 0d. on 7 February 1782 (SNB); the other from Taylor for £3 3s. 0d. on 3 October 1803 (Journal 4, p. 431). These cannot be securely identified from the three Soane copies themselves.
Binding C18th calf, gilt roll-tool borders, gilt-tooled spine, black morocco spine label with gilt-tooled armorial fox and hunter's cap, black and red morocco spine-labels, the former with gilt-tooled armorial stamp of Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland (1705--1774), on a chapeau turned up ermine a fox sejant, stamp 1 (25 x 20 mm). See John Morris and Philip Oldfield, British Armorial Bindings, s.v. Fox, stamp 1. (Accessed 31 October 2012). The library of Stephen, 2nd Baron Holland, was sold at auction in London by S. Christie on 11 December 1775.
