The Johnson and Steevens edition of the plays of Shakespeare was first published in 1773. Having already contributed a list of the extant Shakespeare quartos and notes to the appendix of Samuel Johnson's edition of 1765 and published his own edition of twenty of Shakespeare's plays retaining the spelling of the original quartos in 1766 (q.v.), Steevens collaborated with Johnson on the revision of the latter's edition as acknowledged by the presence of his name on the title-page. It was later re-edited by Isaac Reed (former owner of Soane's copy of the First Folio, q.v.) for the third edition in 1785. The title-pages to volumes II--X do not bear an edition statement. The last leaf of vol. X contains 'Accidental Omissions &c. In Volume I.'. The folded plate in vol. V is an engraving of Morris dancers by J. Keyse Sherwin from an ancient window in the house of George Tollet at Betley in Staffordshire. ESTC t149955; Lowndes III, 2261 (for the first edition).
