This is the first edition to be edited by William Gifford, with his notes and a biography of Jonson, and the first separate edition of Jonson's works since Whelley's edition of 1756. Gifford, the editor of the Quarterly Review, was highly regarded for the thoroughness and accuracy of his editions of British dramatists. With frontispiece engraving of Jonson and facsimile document in vol. I.
Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the frontispiece portrait of Jonson in vol. I. Inscribed in ink on the third front free-endpaper To / Sir John Soane / with the respects of / of his obliged friend / John Taylor and on the fourth free-endpaper, cropped by the binder at the fore-edge John Taylor Esq. / From his old / and affectionat[e] / friend, the / Editor / July 30th. 1816.
Binding C19th diced russia calf, gilt double-ruled borders, gilt double-ruled and blind roll-tooled spine compartments within false bands, direct-lettered in gilt, marbled edges. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for £2 0s. 6d. (and 2s. 3d. for additional lettering), 7 January 1829. (Archives 7/16/29).
