LA ROCHEFOUCAULD, François, duc de (1613--1680)
[Réflexions ou sentences et maximes morales. 1799]
Maximes et réflexions morales du Duc de La Rochefoucauld.
A Londres chez L. L'Homme, 1799.
[4], xiv, 145, [1] p., engr. frontis. port.; 21 cm. (8º)

Imprint on verso of the half-title and colophon reads 'De l'Imprimerie de A. Dulau et Co.; et L. Nardini, No 15, Poland Street'. ESTC suggests that the book was possibly printed in France but publisher, printer and illustration all emanate from the London book-trade. Two translations into English also appeared in 1799. La Rochefoucauld's celebrated maxims or brief reflections on human nature and society were first published in The Hague in 1664 as Réflexions ou sentences et maximes morales. The frontispiece portrait of the author is by Philippe Audinet after J. Petitot, both Huguenot artists of different generations. Pages i--xiv contain 'Notice Sur le caractère et les écrits du duc de la Rochefoucauld', by J.B A. Suard. ESTC n34982.

Binding Early C19th tree calf, gilt roll-tooled borders, gilt-tooled spine, red morocco spine-label.

Reference Number 3689
