Translation originally published in 1698--99. Volume II, containing La Bruyère's Characters, has imprint 'Printed for Edmund Curll, K. Sanger, and John Pemberton', and an additional engraved additional title-page by Van der Gucht, reading 'Monsr. Bruyere The Manners of the Age' with imprint 'London printed for E: Curll, K: Sanger, & I: Pemberton' and incorporating a portrait of La Bruyère. The portrait bust of Theophrastus in vol. I is also by Van der Gucht. Each section has special title-page and separate pagination. Each volume contains divisional, as well as volume, title-pages. 'Of The Manner of Living With Great Men' by Rowe (8 pp. at the end of vol. I) is of the second edition, originally published also in 1713. Two pages of publishers' advertisements at the end of vol. I. ESTC t130565.
