MAGNANT, Peter
The French scholar's assistant: or, practice joined to theory. Calculated both for the ease of the teacher and the more speedy progress of the learner. By Peter Magnant, of Abchurch-Lane. The second edition, very much improved.
London (Place), printed for J. Nourse, bookseller to His Majesty,, 1767.
iv, [4], 208 p. ; 20.4 cm. (8º)

First edition 1764. The final two pages of preliminaries contain a list of 'Books printed for J. Nourse, ... For the Use of Schools' (fifty-nine titles). ESTC t160701; Alston XII.418.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting pages 71--2 and 141--2, replaced by blank leaves. Folded slips of paper are bound in at pp. 56--7, 66--784--85136--7 and 154--5. Signed in ink on the title-page J Soane 1772. Soane was a keen student of French throughout his life, and extensive annotations and references in ink in his earlier and later hand on pastedowns and free-endpapers and throughout the text attest to his continued diligent use of this book, which he had rebacked with the addition of further end-leaves, also heavily annotated. A bill for a copy of 'Magnants Grammar' bought from the architectural bookseller J. Williams on 23 April 1832 for 3s. 6d. cannot refer to the present volume, suggesting that Soane may have bought it as a gift, possibly for his grandson John who education he was overseeing. (Spiers Box, loose bills).

Binding C18th sheep, rebacked in C19th gilt double-ruled calf, black spine-label. Rebacked by Edwin Hutchinson for 10s., 4 July 1831. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.16).
