The first edition of Collier's influential attack on contemporary theatre was published in the same year (q.v.), and attracted controversy and numerous responses. With a frontispiece portrait of the author. Lists of 'Books Printed for R. Sare and H. Hindmarsh' and '... for S. Keble ...' on last three pages of the preliminaries. ESTC r13037.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the portrait. The top of the title-page has been excised as if to remove an inscription. This copy or the copy of the first edition was bought together with a volume containing Collier's A defence of The short view of the profaneness and immorality of the English stage, &c., 1705 (q.v.) with A second defence ..., 1700 (q.v.) and A farther vindication ..., 1708 (q.v.) from W. Boone for 4s. 6d. on 19 January 1822. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.4.11).

Binding C18th mottled calf, blind-tooled panels, blind-ruled spine without label or lettering.
