Collier's controversial work A short view of the immorality and profaneness of the English stage was first published in 1698 (q.v.) and drew numerous counterattacks, among them Edward Filmer's A defence of plays, 1707 to which the present pamphlet is a response. ESTC t66950.

Copy Notes Bound (3) with A defence of The short view ... [2nd ed.], 1705 (q.v.) and A second defence ..., 1700 (q.v.) in a volume bought from W. Boone together with a copy of 'Collier on the Stage' (q.v.) for 4s. 6d. on 19 January 1822. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.4.11).

Binding C18th calf, blind double-ruled borders with blind roll-tooling parallel to spine, dark red spine-label with spine-title 'Collier's Defence'.
