First published 1783--84. The title-page to vol. III bears no edition statement. Davies had turned from a failed bookselling business to the stage, and retired from acting in 1762 to establish a bookshop at 8 Russell Street, Covent Garden, where James Boswell first met Samuel Johnson the following year. He also turned to writing chiefly biographical material, most importantly Memoirs of the life of David Garrick, 1780 (3rd ed. 1781, q.v.), in which he was assisted by Johnson. ESTC t136456.
