Imprint on title-page verso and colophon of vols I--II 'De l'Imprimerie de R. Juigné' and on colophon of vol. III 'De l'Imprimerie de P. Da Ponte'. Originally published in Paris in 1807 and simultanously in English and German translations, Madame de Staël's proto-feminist second novel is regarded as one of the most important novels of early French Romanticism. It had an immediate and huge success (and reinforced Napoleon's condemnations of the author in her exile).
Copy Notes Lacking half-titles? Infrequent marginal notes in pencil and marks of emphasis in pencil or ink, some probably in Soane's hand. Some of the marked passages relate to Roman buildings, but any corresponding annotations on the endpapers according to Soane's custom would have been lost in rebinding.
Binding C19th polished calf, gilt-ruled borders, gilt double-ruled spines, green and red morocco spine-labels. Bound by Hood & McCullock for 6s. 9d., 23 August 1826. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.13).
