The collected edition of Madame de Sévigné's letters to her daughter Madame de Grignan, edited by Denis Marius de Perrin at the request of the author's grand-daughter Madame de Simiane, was originally published in 1734 in four volumes in response to the widespread circulation of éditions furtives (piracies) based on manuscript copies, with two further volumes added in 1737; subsequently a further two volumes were added in 1754. The letters, not intended for publication, were widely praised for their sensibility and spontaneity in their descriptions of contemporary affairs, fashionable society, and day to day life.
