Anonymous. By the Abbé Prévost. First published in four volumes in Paris, 1728--29, with a Suite published in Amsterdam in 1731. Prévost's best-known novel Manon Lescaut was first published as tome VII of the Suite in 1731; it was quickly suppressed in France but circulated widely in pirated editions. It is not included in the present edition (see BNF catalogue). The caption-title and running-title read 'Memoires Du Marquis De ***' . Harrisse, 28.

Copy Notes Bound as volumes I--VI of a ten-volume set with the 1756 Amsterdam edition of Manon Lescaut (q.v.) and an anonymous Suite de l'histoire du Chevalier Des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut, Amsterdam, 1762 (q.v.). Inscribed in ink on front free-endpapers of vols I--II John Soane / 1797. The front free-endpapers of the vols I--II are also inscribed in pencil 10 toms and with bookseller's cyphers in the hand of the Thomas Boone, suggesting that in spite of the discrepancy with the date of Soane's inscription this is probably the copy bought in Swallow Street (together with a copy of Dacier's Horace, q.v. and Richardson's Grandisson in French, q.v. for £2.0.0, in all 27 vols) 3 January 1794 (Jnl 2, p. 325). Thomas Boone is recorded at 91, Swallow Street in the 1802--1805 editions of Holden's annual list of coaches, waggons, carts, vessels, &c. The top of the title-page of vol. I is clipped as if to remove former ownership inscription.

Binding C18th mottled calf, gilt-tooled spines, dark red morocco spine-labels, marbled edges and endpapers.

Reference Number 3784

Additional Names Thomas Boone
