Originally published in 1667. 'Un Docteur de Sorbonne' = Nicolas Perrault. With a preface by Alexandre Varet (according to Barbier). The third edition. The imprint is probably false. A violent attack on the doctrines and ethics of the Jesuits, written by the French Jansenist Nicolas Perrault. The Parlement ordered it to be burnt in 1670. It was translated into English in 1670. Copy Notes Bought from T. & W. Boone, 5 January 1830 with 'Hamilton on Vases 4 vol folio' (q.v.), for £18. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.3). Bookseller's pencil note on first front free-endpaper 3 vols rare 2.2.0, and a pencil code on first rear free-endpaper. The arms on the covers are those of Rev. Theodore Williams (d. 1826) whose collection was sold by Stewart, Wheatley and Adlard in 1827. Williams' library was notable for its handsome bindings, usually the work of Clarke. (See Quaritch, Dictionary of English Book Collectors, v. 6.)

Binding Early C19th calf, gilt double-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spine compartments, tan and green morocco spine-labels, upper covers embossed with armorial crest and monogram 'TW' and motto 'Deus Alit Me', i.e. Theodore Williams, and lower covers with armorial crest and shield, gilt edges.
