Not in fact by Madame de Pompadour. Translation of Memoires de Madame la marquise de Pompadour, variously attributed to Claude-Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon and to Marianne Agnès Pillement, Dame de Fauques. The first French edition was published with a Liège imprint but was printed in the British Isles, probably in London (see ESTC t221868; J.M. Quérard, Les supercheries littéraires dévoilées, 2nd ed., vol. 3, 204f). The translation has been attributed to Samuel Johnson. ESTC n11307.
Copy Notes Soane's dye-sinker bookplate is present in the second volume only.
Binding C18th sprinkled sheep, rebacked in C19th gilt-ruled calf, black morocco spine-labels. Rebacked and lettered by Edwin Hutchinson for 1s., 5 September 1829. (Archives 7/10/19).
