The first book of Bouchet's Serées [= 'soirées'] was originally published in 1584, and the revised complete text first appeared in Paris and in Lyon in 1608. A collection of thirty-six after-dinner dialogues comprising anecdotes, medical and legal fables, instructive and galant merry tales etc., in Middle French, drawing on eclectic sources in the manner of Montaigne or Rabelais. On the evidence of the two sets in Soane's library, at least two issues of apparently the same impression (having the running title on verso of leaf [9] of vol. I reading 'Douziesme' instead of 'Discours', leaves 162, 207, 223 and 229 misnumbered 16, 297, 220 and 230 respectively, and leaves 385--7 misnumbered 585--7) were published in Rouen in 1615, one with the imprint of Jean Berthelin as above and device of a blacksmith with motto 'Cvncta In Tempore', and one with the imprint of Robert Valentin and woodcut title-page device of two satyrs; there was also a Lyon edition in the same year. In vol. III the edition statement reads 'Reueu & corrigé de nouueau par l'Autheur' and the colophon at the end reads 'Cette seconde impression, faicte sur la copie augmentee & corrigee par l'Autheur, à esté acheuee le vingt huitiesme iour de Mars mil six cens quinze'. Date in vol. I--II reads: M. VI CXV., and in vol. III: M.D.C.XV. The final leaf in vol. I [KK4] is a blank. The present copy is a mixed set with the first and third volumes in the Berthelin issue and the second part in the 1608 Paris edition with the imprint of Jeremie Perier and the collation as above. Another copy in Soane's library (q.v.) is also a mixed set with the first two parts in the Valentin issue and the third in the Berthelin issue.
