[Conquestes amoureuses du grand Alcandre dans les Pays-Bas. English]
The amorous conquests of the great Alcander, or, the amours of the French king and Madam Montespan.
London: printed for R. Bentley and S. Magnes, 1685.
[6], 178 p. ; 14.2 cm. (12º)

Anonymous. First edition of the English translation of Conquestes amoureuses du grand Alcandre dans les Pays-Bas, first published in 1695 and attributed to Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras. (See A.A. Barbier, Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes, vol. 1 (1872), col. 695). Courtilz de Sandras is remembered as the author of a semi-fictional memoir of D'Artagnan, published in 1700, which was the chief source for his portrayal in Dumas's The three musketeers. The 'Great Alcander' of the title of the present work is King Louis XIV, who had several illegitimate children by his (married) mistress the Marquise de Montespan. Includes a list of books printed for R. Bentley and S. Magnes at the end of the preface. The first 'e' in the running-title 'Preface' on p. [5] is faulty.
