COURTILZ DE SANDRAS, Gatien de (1644--1712)
Les dames dans leur naturel, ou la galanterie sans façon. Sous le regne du Grand Alcandre.
A Cologne chez Pierre Marteau, 1686.
[4], 228 p. ; 12.5 cm. (12º)

Anonymous. By Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras. (See A.A. Barbier, Dictionnaire des ouvrages anonymes, vol. 1 (1872), col. 835). The imprint is fictitious; the fictitious Cologne imprint of Pierre Marteau (or Pierre de Marteau) was probably invented by the Elzeviers in Amsterdam in the 1660s, and soon began to be used by other publishers and printers in the Netherlands, France and Germany to evade censorship of political satires, pirated editions and sexually explicit works. (See L. Janmart de Brouillant, La liberté de la presse in France aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles: histoire de Pierre du Marteau, imprimeur à Cologne, Paris 1888; reprinted Geneva: Slatkine, 1971). Woodcut armillary sphere device on title-page. Courtilz de Sandras is remembered as the author of a semi-fictional memoir of D'Artagnan, published in 1700, which was the chief source for his portrayal in Dumas's The three musketeers. The 'Grand Alcandre' of the title of the present work is King Louis XIV.
