A prose translation. Dacier's editions of Horace first appeared in 1697; this is the first edition to include versions and commentaries by Noël Sanadon, with a dedication to Horace Walpole. Includes Suetonius' life of Horace and Dacier's 'response à la critique de M. Masson' which is dated 1707, in vol. I. Frontispiece engravings are by Pieter Tanje. In tome VIII, leaf M4 at the end of the first pagination sequence is blank; the index follows with separate pagination and register.

Copy Notes Copy 1: Probably the copy bought in Swallow Street (together with Richardson's Grandisson in French, q.v. and Prévost's Mémoires et avantures d'un homme de qualité, q.v. for £2.0.0) on 3 January 1794. (Jnl 2, p. 325). The bookseller Thomas Boone is recorded at 91, Swallow Street in the 1802--1805 editions of Holden's annual list of coaches, waggons, carts, vessels, &c. Volume I with bookseller's inscriptions in pencil 8 Tom. £1..4s..0 / 8 tom - -14s- on the front free-endpaper, and the rear pastedown inscribed in pencil W [I or J]- and Feb-16-78. Inscriptions in ink on front free-endpaper of all volumes Nov: / 1739 and library shelf-marks in the form C3. Nº. 6. to C3 Nº. 13, with an earlier shelf-mark in the form N. 4. 5S. [over] 9. to 13. crossed out in all but the last volume; traces of the removal of bookplates on the front pastedowns.
Copy 2: 16.3 cm. Volume I with bookseller's code in ink d/m/z and inventory number(?) in pencil 1327 on front pastedown, and traces of pencil price on front free endpaper; rear pastedown inscribed in ink in a small neat hand Collated, Perfect. S.H..

Binding Copy 1: C18th sprinkled calf, gilt double-ruled spines with gilt centre-pieces, red and black morocco spine-labels.
