BOXHORN, Marcus Zuerius (1612--1653)
Commentariolvs de statu confoederatarum provinciarvm Belgii. Editio tertia auctior & emendatior. Accessit de eadem materia Pavli Mervlæ diatriba: nec non decretum ordd. Holland. & VVest-Frisiæ, de antiquo iure Reip. Batavicæ.
Hagae-Comitis (Place), apud Iohannem Verhoeve,, 1650.
[4], 126; 15, [1]; [2], 21--35, [1] p. ; 12.6 cm. (12º)

First edition 1649. Colophon reads 'Ludguni Batavorum. Typis Philippi de Cro·y, anno 1650'. Boxhorn, and before him, Paul Merula, a Dutch jurist, held Justus Lipsius's chair of history at the University of Leyden. Merula published treatises on law and history. His 'Decretum Ordinum Hollandiæ Et VVest-Frisiæ, De Antiquo Jure Reipublicæ Batavicæ, Nunc primum ex vernaculo Latinè reditum', first published in 1630, forms p. [19]--35 at end, and his 'De Statu Reipubl. Batavicæ Diatriba' (1630) has a divisional title-page and separate pagination. Running title: 'De Statv Foederat. Belgii Provinciar.'.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting all before page 1. i.e. the title-page and contents. Former ownership inscription in ink of Th[omas Cart]wright or [Ark]wright on front pastedown obscured by Soane's spade-shield bookplate. Possibly Thomas Cartwright (1671--1748) of Aynho, whose engraved armorial bookplate dated 1698 can be identified on Soane's copy of Walter Charleton's Two discourses, 2nd ed., 1675 (q.v.). Soane extensively remodelled Anyhoe Park, Northamptonshire for William Ralph Cartwright in 1799--1804. See Ptolemy Dean, Sir John Soane and the country estate, 1999, pp. 79--89. There is no evidence that Soane's acquisition of either volume is connected with his work at Aynhoe Park.

Binding C17th mottled sheep, blind double-ruled borders, blind-tooled spine, paper spine-label, ink-lettered spine-title.

Reference Number 3849

Additional Names Merula, Paulus (1558--1607); Cartwright, Thomas (1671--1748); Arkwright(?), Thomas
