First edition; entered 20 May 1600. The first and last leaves are blanks. The earliest version of the Natural history of Pliny the Elder in English was by John Alday in a translation of Pierre de Changy's French abstract of Pliny's work in 1566. Philemon Holland attempted the Latin original and he was also the first English translator of Livy (q.v.) and Septonius, of Plutarch's Morals and of Ammianus Marcellinus. Copy Notes Bound in one volume, wanting the initial and final blanks. Bought at the Adam sale, May 1818, lot 160. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.3.11). Title-page has been trimmed very close at the head of the title to remove an inscription and mounted. Pencil marks in vol. I index corresponding to marginal notes in pencil on p. 188 Bricks & tiles / Brick & / tile kiln / tiling & slating / Houses; on p. 482 Reeds & Canes / used for cover[ing] / House; further reference to p. 499 paragraph B 'Pillers of Crassus did beautifie the theatre'. Further marginal notes in pencil in volume II, p. 579 Mausoleum / of Porsenna; on p. 597 Miroirs and on p. 598 Glass flexible with other marks of emphasis. Notes in ink in an earlier hand on p. 630 Chalazias and on p. 631 Honey.

Binding C19th polished calf, thick-thin gilt-ruled border and spine, green morocco spine-label.
