Originally published 1702--04. Edited by Laurence Hyde, Earl of Rochester, Thomas Sprat, Henry Aldrich and others (see H. Carter, History of the Oxford University Press, v. 1, 1975, pp. 230--6). Clarendon was the first great historical writer in English literature and his history is now valued for its intellectual sophistication and for the portraits of his contemporaries. This is the first illustrated folio edition; parts II and III have divisional titles reading '... Volume The Second (Third)' and continuous register. The plates include 87 of the 88 portraits from the earlier editions grouped three or four to the sheet on 21 leaves and a frontispiece portrait of the author and full size portrait of Charles I. ESTC t53946.

Copy Notes Bought from Thomas Boone as vol. I in a two-volume uniformly bound set with The life of Edward Earl of Clarendon, 1759 (q.v.) for £2 10s., 16 June 1806 (paid 16 July). (Spiers Box). With Boone's note and codes in pencil on first free-endpaper The History & life / Complete / with the heads / 2 vols. £2=10s=0d. Earlier cyphers in ink on front and rear free-endpapers.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-ruled and dotted borders, gilt-tooled spine compartments, olive and black morocco spine-labels.
