Thomas Birch's edition of the works of Robert Boyle was originally published in five volumes in 1744, having been announced by the publisher Andrew Millar in a prospectus Proposals for publishing by subscription a complete collection of the works of the Honourable Robert Boyle Esq; printed from the best editions in December 1741. Includes Thomas Birch's preface to the folio edition of 1744. The engraved frontispiece portrait of Boyle is by B. Barron after T. Kersseboom; Boyle's portrait also figures in a roundel within the title-page vignette engraved by H. Gravelot. The 24 plates, printed on 16 leaves, are engraved by J. Mynde. Pages 425--444 are omitted in the pagination of vol. IV which also jumps from 644 to 745, but text and register are continuous. Another issue of vol. I (ESTC t113550) bears the imprint commencing 'printed for J. and F. Rivington and L. Davis [et al]' who are not otherwise included in the imprints to vols II--VI; the present issue with the imprint omitting Rivington and Davis in vol. I also is not in ESTC. J.F. Binding C18th diced russia calf, gilt-ruled within gilt roll-tooled dogtooth borders, gilt-tooled spine compartmentss, black and green morocco spine-labels with gilt-tooled thistles, marbled endpapers.
