Alexander Monro (primus) was the founder of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (1741, designed by William Adam) and the first in a dynasty in the Chair of Anatomy at Edinburgh University spanning 126 years. The life of the author' (pp. [ix]-xxiv) was written by Donald Monro. The portrait of Monro is by James Basire after Allan Ramsay, 1776. The engraved plates are by A. Bell. Pages 258, 549, 560, 651, 652, 685--688, and 749 incorrectly numbered 158, 449, 550, 451, 452, 485--488, and 747 respectively. Printer's imprint at foot of p. 791: Printed by Macfarquhar and Elliot, Edinburgh, 1781. ESTC t97696.

Copy Notes Bought from Thomas Boone for 10s. 6d., 24 November 1808. (Spiers Box). Inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper in Boone's hand Plates =s10=d6 and bookseller's code.
