First published in 1694 following preliminary 'pre-editions' in 1687. The celebrated Académie française was founded by Cardinal Richelieu in 1635 with the primary goal of creating a French dictionary. The fifth edition, first issued in 1798, was current in Soane's day; it is present in his library in the 1815 (q.v.) and 1825 (q.v.) printings. The eighth edition appeared in 1935 and the ninth was begun in 1986. The allegorical frontispiece in the present edition is engraved by Joseph Mariette after J.B. Corneille incorporating a portrait bust of Louis XIV by G. Edelinck; the engraved title-page vignettes and headpieces are unsigned. The volume I title-page is printed in red and black.

Binding C18th vellum, blind-panelled covers with initials 'H·B' in central stamp, blind-ruled spine, ink-lettered spine-title.
