Aesop was published early in the era of the incunables; Caxton published a famous London edition in 1484 and Wynkin de Word another. Latin editions of Aesop usually included a selection from the following interpretations: those by Guillielmus Goudanus, Hadrianus Barlandus, Erasmus Roterodamus, Aulus Gellius, Laurentius Valla, Angelus Politianus, Petrus Crinitus, Ioanes Antonius Campanus and Rimicius. The present copy, wanting all before the final leaf of prelims and all after p. 160, appears to collate to the format A-M8. Numerous editions with this collation ([16], 176 p.) appeared in Cambridge, London and Oxford from at least 1633 with title: Æsopi Phrygis fabulæ, jam recenter ex collatione optimorum exemplarium emendatius excusæ, unà cum nonnullis variorum authorum Fabulis adjectis: et indice correctiori præfixo; similar editions were still being issued in London as late as the 1780s. The present edition has the page numbers of pp. 54-57 in round brackets, without running title.

Wanting title-page and preliminaries to leaf A7; A8r continues with the end of the index (first line: 'Viro inope & infirmo'), list of 'Interpretes: Adrianus Barlandus, Angelus Politianus ... Rimicius.'; A8v contains 'Petri Ægidii Antuerpiani Hendecasyllabon.'; text begins on B1, i.e. page 1; wanting all at end M1-M8 (after p. 160). Pages 23-26 (C4-6), 85-88 (G3-4)and 109-110 (H7) excised. Some MSS. inscriptions in ink on first few pages and on page 160.
Binding Laced-in contemporary sheep over cartonnage, blind-ruled borders, blind-ruled spine, paper spine-label lettered in ink 'Æsop / Fabulæ'.
