Pope's celebrated translation of the Iliad took six years to complete, and first appeared in 1715; together with his translation of the Odyssey, first published in 1726, it established his fortune. The present edition was sometimes issued with The Odyssey of Homer. Translated by Alexander Pope, ... printed by Bye and Law for the same booksellers, 1796 (q.v.). Includes 'An Essay On The Life, Writings And Learning Of Homer' by T. Parnell in vol. I, and Pope's essay on Homer's battles in vol. II. The notes are written in part by William Broome. The frontispiece of a bust of Homer is by T. Trotter, the engraved headpiece in vol. I and plate (Shield of Achilles, with a tissue-guard) in vol. V are by Barlow. Soane acquired a cast of Flaxman's plaster version of the Shield of Achilles which is now exhibited in the Museum's basement ante-room. ESTC t90239.

Binding C18th tree-calf, thick-thin gilt-ruled spines with gilt-tooled dove motif, black morocco spine-labels. Uniform with the companion edition of Pope's translation of The Odyssey, 1796 (q.v.).
