Stuttgart:, aux frais de l'auteur et de la librairie de J.G. Cotta. Paris: chez Firmin Didot père et fils,, 1823. (1821.)
Text: [4], IV, 55, [1], 42 p. : w.-engr. diagrams ; 56.5 cm. (2°)
Atlas: XVIII double-page pl. (2 hand-col.) ; 77.5 cm. (elephant 2º)

First edition of the French-language version of Boisserée's work on Cologne cathedral, one of the great architectural books of the nineteenth century; it was also available in German under the title Geschichte und Beschreibung des Doms von Köln (atlas: Ansichten, Rissen und einzelnen Theilen des Doms von Köln). Boisserée began preparations for the work as early as 1809 and publication started in the early 1820s; the large size of the plates meant that the volumes had to be printed by the Parisian firm of Didot. The 'Avant Propos' promises a work consisting of five 'livraisons' and twenty plates. Despite the date given on the title-plate (pl. I) the atlas was in fact issued between 1823 and 1831, and the text volume was only completed in 1832. See Hugh Pagan, Architecture catalogue 19 'Architecture' (February 1994), no. 15, pp. 8--10.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting pp. 13--42 of the description of the plates (which is here bound before the 'Première Partie') and all but plates I--IV, VI, X, XII and XV. Second front free-endpaper of text volume inscribed in pencil 16.16.0. According to a bill in the archive a copy of this work was bought from Weale for 16 guineas in 1830. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.10). However this or a very similar copy with only eight plates is also marked up in Soane's copy of Priestley and Weale's Catalogue of books on architecture, 1831 (q.v.), item 49, where the price is given as '£7.17s.6d'. The publication date given in the Catalogue is '1827', suggesting the Soane copy may represent the state of the work at that date. Also in the Soane archive and possibly relating to a copy of this work is a letter from Mr Papworth [identified with J.B. Papworth, the father of Wyatt Papworth, fourth curator of the Museum] dated 12 February 1827, introducing Mr Smith who has / the disposal of an important / architectural work published at / Stutgard of the Cathedral of / Cologne ... only lately / ... introduced in to this Country, ... (Priv. Corr. XVI.F.58). It is however not clear whether a further letter dated 15 March 1827 and signed F. Schmidt written in reply to Soane's expression of interest in subscribing to the Cathedral of Cologne, ... shortly / to be completed, comprising lithographic prints, ... / ... 48 prints, which are finished, ... relates to this or to a different, as yet unidentified work. (Priv. Corr. XVI.F.59).

Binding C19th half dark green morocco, gilt-tooled spines, marbled-paper boards.

Reference Number 4030

Additional Names Weale; Kölner Dom; Papworth, John Buonarotti (1775--1847); Smith, Mr
