Plates numbered I--XI including the frontispiece, pl. V. The sixth volume of Britton's Cathedral antiquities, originally published in parts. The departure of the draughtsman Frederick Mackenzie after the 'Lichfield' volume (q.v.) led to a drop in the quality of the plates in this volume. BAL, Early printed books, no. 405.
Copy Notes A large paper copy with a full set of proof plates and 4 proofs before letters. Bought from Britton for 4 guineas in January (?) 1822. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.5). It is bound (3) with the two previous and one following volumes in the series, The history and antiquities of ... York, 1819 (q.v.), The history and antiquities of ... Lichfield, 1820 (q.v.) and The history and antiquities of ... Canterbury, 1821 (q.v.).
Binding C19th half brown goatskin, gilt-ruled borders, gilt double-rule spine direct-lettered in gilt, marbled-paper boards. Bound as vol. [II] '1819--21' of a four-volume set of 'Britton's / Cathedral / Antiquities.'
