DUMONT, Gabriel-Pierre Martin (ca. 1720--after 1790)
41 pl. (on 35 leaves) ; 54.1 cm. (2°)

Issued as suite 9 in Dumont's Recueil de plusieurs parties de l'architecture, 3 tomes, c. 1770 (q.v.). The engraved title-plate is numbered as plate 1 (top right) and suite No. 11 (top left) and the remaining plates are numbered 2--41. The publishing history of this collection is complicated, with Dumont having apparently added and subtracted plates from the collection, making small alterations to the title-plate. The BAL catalogue (notes to no. 938) identifies four stages: a first issue [A], undated and without 'et de France' on the title-plate, which must have appeared before 1765; another issue [B] of "about 20 of these plates, some slightly altered or reworked, together with 14 more" appearing as suite 'No. 9' in the Recueil between 1766 and 1770, with the addition of 'et de France' to the title and 'No. 9' inserted top right (probably corresponding to the Berlin copy); another version [C] with a line added to the title-plate indicating a new total of '54: planche, du prix de 24:H'; a sixty-plate, separate edition [D], likely first issued in or after 1774 (q.v.), the latest date given on any of the plates. The present variant is not noted in the BAL catalogue, but must represent an earlier version of issue [B] with the suite number wrongly given as 'No. 11' top left and the plate number '1' top right, before the erasure of the suite number and the replacement of the plate number by a corrected suite number matching the suite order given in the engraved 'Catalogue' at the end of each volume of the Recueil. The Millard copy counts 44 plates on 39 leaves. See BAL, Early printed books, no. 938 (describing the 1774 "edition"); Millard I, pp. 167, 171; Berlin Kat. 2416.
