DUMONT, Gabriel-Pierre Martin (ca.1720--after 1790)
Diverses veuës de Rome et composition libres, mises en lumiere par Mr. Dumont.
[Paris]:, [c. 1770].
[20] pl. (on 9 leaves) ; 54.1 cm. (2°)

This suite of small neo-classical views and compositions of Roman antiquities by Dumont, Le Geay, P. Moreau and Natali forms part of suite 12 in Dumont's Recueil de plusieurs parties de l'architecture, 3 tomes, c. 1770 (q.v.). The engraved 'Catalogue' at the end of each volume of the Recueil calls for 25 feuilles or leaves of plates of a 'Suitte de Vuës de divers Edifices tant d'Italie que de France avec des notes et remarques sur les parties les plus intéressantes, on y a joint des compositions libres dans le genre pittoresque'; most copies appear to consist of a suite of vedute with engraved descriptive text mainly designed by Israel Silvestre and executed by Israel Henriot with the title Les eglises des stations de Rome, et vues de Lyon Grenoble, &c. (q.v.), followed by a second suite titled as above to make up the 25 leaves called for in the 'Catalogue', distinguished in Millard as suite 12b and in the Berlin catalogue as 12a. The precise make-up of individual copies appears to vary, with the Millard copy containing a suite distinguished as 'Suite de Ruines d'Architecture ...' not present in the Soane copy, which includes a plate (fol. [7]) captioned 'Divers Compositions d'Architecture dans le Genre Sepulcral, faisant parties de l'Oeuvre de Mr. Dumont, ...' not recorded in the Millard or Berlin copies. See Millard I, pp. 168, 172; Berlin Kat. 2416.

Binding C18th mottled sheep, blind triple-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spine with floral motifs, red and black spine labels, forming tom. III of Dumont's Recueil de plusieurs parties de l'architecture.
