FERRABOSCO, Martino (d. 1623)
[8], XXXV, [1] p., add. engr. t.-pl., XXX, [1] pl. ; 47.9 cm. (2°)

The second edition, but probably the first with letterpress text. All the plates are double-page except for plates XVII, XXI, XXVIII, and the unnumbered plate depicting the tomb of Pope Paul III which is described in the letterpress at the end of pl. XXX, which are all single-page; plates III, XXVI, and XXX are printed from two coppers and plates VI and XI are folded in the Soane copy. The plates were first printed and issued in 1620 as stated in the title of the present edition, and were unnumbered in their original state. For the 1684 edition roman numerals were added in the top right-hand corners. The Soane Museum copy, like the British Library copy, the compass rose is still visible in the centre of pl. X, the lettering is visible under the numbering of pl. XII, and pl. XIV (unnumbered in the BAL copy) is numbered and retains the cross-hatching in the clouds, thirteen cherubs' heads, three putti, and two further faint figures to the left of St Peter in the top right corner, as in the 1620 [unnumbered] state rather than having the clouds linearly delineated, five cherubs and three putti only as in the BAL copy (see figs. 1 and 2 in the BAL catalogue). The Soane and BL copies may thus represent the same intermediate state. BAL, Early printed books, no. 1053.

Copy Notes With pl. XXI misbound to face pl. XXVIII, and the unnumbered plate of the tomb of Paul III misbound to face pl. XVII. Bought from T. & W. Boone for £2 2s. on 15 April 1826. (Spiers Box). Bookseller's inscription in pencil on front pastedown: Collated.
