With the publisher's printed label pasted in on the front paste-down giving the price of this 'Illustrative Key to Gillray's Works', intended to accompany the collected edition of Gillray's caricatures issued by Thomas M'Lean in the same year (q.v.), as £2. 12s. 6d. A printed 'Note' pasted in on the title-page explains that the high price of the 'Key' is owing to the fact that only 100 copies were printed for sale 'at great expense of time and research.' The final [4] pp. contain a list of political caricatures recently published by M'Lean.
Binding C19th half black morocco, gilt-tooled borders, marbled-paper boards, gilt-tooled spine, gilt edges.
