GALLERIA GIUSTINIANA ...
[Galleria Giustiniana]
Galleria Givstiniana del Marchese Vincenzo Givstiniani (... parte seconda)
[Rome],, [1631--1640?]
2 vols ; 45.9 cm. (2°)
I: 153 pl.
II: 169 pl. (1 fold.)

Giustiniani's collection of ancient sculpture was the largest in Rome and his illustrated catalogue, engraved throughout, was the first of its kind ever to be published. There is some uncertainty about the date of the original publication. The portraits of Vincenzo Giustiniani (pl. 2 in both volumes) are dated 'Romæ 1631'. Biographie universelle, suppl. 1838, vol. 65, p. 426 gives the date as 1640 and the information: "Les cuivres ayant été conservés, on en a tiré depuis 1750 de nouvelles épreuves". The part title to vol. II is printed from a separate copper; The copies at the Royal Academy of Arts have a (later?) title variant continuing '... Parte Prima Tavole No. CLII. (Parte Seconda Tavole No. CLXVII.)'. The antiquities themselves now form a part of the Museo Torlonia in Rome, the property of Prince Giulio Torlonia; several of the sculptures were acquired in 1720 by Lord Pembroke. Plates 153--168 in volume II are devoted to the various buildings (palaces, villa, chapel and garden buildings) belonging to the Giustinani family who are portrayed at the beginning of this volume on plates 2--6.

Copy Notes This was Reynolds' copy: his name inscribed in ink on the engraved title-plate of vol. II and the title-plates of both volumes with the stamp of ownership applied at the time of the sale of his collection in March 1798 (q.v.). As lot 1547 in Reynolds's sale it was sold for £2 7s. The name of the buyer is not recorded; Soane bought it from J. Williams for £5, 15 September 1830. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.6). Front free-endpaper of vol. I with traces of pencil inscription Galleria Giustiniana, 2 vol Russia - Sir J Reynolds [illegible]. Plates 6 and 20 in volume I are squared in pencil; plates 18, 25, 26 and 30 have pencil sketches of torsos or legs in the margins.

Binding C18th full diced russia, gilt-tooled borders incorporating various insects (grasshoppers, flies, beetles, snails, etc.), gilt-tooled turn-ins, gilt-tooled spine, red and dark blue morocco spine-labels.
