Lugt 10794. The sale catalogue of Joseph-Maximilien Hurtault's library is preceded by a lithograph portrait of him signed 'Imp. Litho. de Melle. Formentin', and an anonymous biographical 'notice' about his largely administrative architectural career. Hurtault is perhaps best remembered as a collector of books on architecture and related subjects. His library was one of the largest of its kind in Europe; larger than that of his French contemporaries, A.-C. Quatremère-de-Quincy (1755--1849) and Jean Rondelet (1734--1829), and larger even than Soane's architectural library, not including pamphlets, sale catalogues and ephemera. The sale of Hurtault's library was followed in 1825 by a sale of his collection of prints and drawings, plans, medals, bronzes, marbles, plasters, optical and mathematical instruments, architectural drawing instruments etc. of which there is a catalogue in the British Library but not at the Soane. The mis-en-scène at Hurtault's house at 4 rue Richepanse must have been somewhat similar to 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields.

Copy Notes Inscribed in pencil in a French hand with the prices and in some cases with the names or initials of the buyer. Bound after L.M. Fontan and C.D. Dupeuty, Le procès d'un maréchal de France, ... drame historique, 1831 (q.v.).

Binding C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-rule spine, black spine-label lettered 'Le Procès D'Un Maréchal &c'., later numbered '27' in a series of pamphlet volumes.

Reference Number 4155
