Volume IV has imprint: H. Fisher, R. Fisher, & P. Jackson. Each memoir is separately paged. The royal quarto edition was discontinued after the publication of volume IV in 1833. Volume V includes a 12-pp. memoir of Soane by John Britton, accompanied by an engraving by J. Thomson after Thomas Lawrence's portrait. An ALs from the painter John Moore in the Soane archive dated 3 August 1832 concerns the selection of a portrait of Soane for inclusion in the work, to which Soane replied on 8 August drawing his attention to Charles Turner's mezzotint prints published in 1830 (q.v.). (Priv. Corr. XVI.F.103,104).
Copy Notes All plates in this set are india-paper proofs. Soane paid £16 on 11 April 1832 (recorded on 11 April 1833 in Ledger E, p. 199) for a subscription to a 'King's Edition' of 4 volumes issued in numbers, after viewing a specimen sent by Robert Fisher on 9 April (Priv. Corr. XVI.F.119). On 6 May 1834 Soane paid £2 12s. for proofs of numbers 49 to 60 completing volume V which includes a memoir of him (with some dates corrected in pencil), and an engraving of Lawrence's portrait. (Priv. Corr. E.7.32, 39; and Ledger E, p. 209). Though the proprietors intended to continue the work at a later date, the cost must have been prohibitive and no more was published. An additional copy of the portrait of Henry Fuseli engraved by John Rogers after George Henry Harlow is filed with correspondence in Soane's archive. (Priv. Corr. I.F.9).
Binding C19th half diced russia, gilt triple-rule borders, marbled-paper boards, gilt-ruled and direct-lettered spines, gilt tops.
