[Works in architecture. Vol. 3. 1822]
The works in architecture of Robert and James Adam, esquires. Volume III. Containing the remainder of the designs, to complete those in the preceding volumes. = Les ouvrages d'architecture de MM. Robert et Jacques Adam. Tome III. ...
London (Place), printed for Priestley and Weale,, 1822.
[6] p., [25] engr. pl. (1 double) ; 63.1 cm. (1º)

Parallel English-French letterpress; English title and imprint printed above French version. The publishers Priestley and Weale compiled this continuation of the Works (originally issued 1773--79, q.v.) mainly from unpublished coppers (15 plates before letters rejected for the first two volumes) purchased at the Adam sale in July 1821, and including also at least five more plates originally published as separate prints during Robert Adam's lifetime. Despite the publishers' claim in the preface to be 'fulfilling the intention of the late Robert and James Adam' in publishing the present volume, there is no evidence that such a continuation was ever intended by them. The unnumbered plates are assigned numbers I to XXV in the 'Explanation ...'. Harris and Savage, 7 (pp. 83-88, 94); BAL, Early printed books, no. 29; Millard II, 2 (pp. 13-18).

Copy Notes Purchased from Priestley and Weale's Catalogue of books on architecture, 1831 (q.v.), item 7 '... Vol. 3, separately, being the volume usually wanted, £1.16s.'.

Binding C19th half red straight-grained morocco, marbled-paper boards, gilt-tooled spine with inverted bracket ornaments instead of the vases on volumes I and II (q.v.) which it was intended to match, green morocco spine labels. Edwin Hutchinson was paid 4s. for half binding in morocco and lettering one imperial folio volume on 6 June 1831. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.16).
