KNIGHT'S QUARTERLY MAGAZINE ...
Knight's Quarterly Magazine. Volume II. January--April, 1824.
London (Place), printed for Charles Knight,, 1824.
[4], iii, [1], ii, [1], 244--472 p. ; 20.7 cm. (8°)

Volume II, No. II only. This number, issued in April 1824, contains a wide-ranging and witty attack on Soane, entitled "On The Sixth, Or Bœotian Order Of Architecture", to which is appended an "Ode On A Distant Prospect of Dulwich College", a 'sportive imitation of Gray's celebrated "Ode to Eton College"'. The scurrilous production is signed 'O.M.-- R.H', who are identified in the contents by the fictitious names, Oliver Medley and Reginald Holyoake. A.T. Bolton attributed it to Thomas Stedman Whitwell (1784--1840), an erstwhile student of Soane's at the Royal Academy. The piece so enraged Soane that he rushed headlong into legal action against the proprietor of the magazine, which only made matters worse, for he lost the case and had to pay costs. See A.T. Bolton, The portrait of Sir John Soane (London 1927), pp. 144 n.1, 374-81, reprinting the whole of the essay and ode; see also Gillian Darley, John Soane: an accidental romantic (London 1999), pp. 278-9. Soane had already taken action against references to the architecture of the Dulwich Picture Gallery described in an issue of The Museum, or, record of literature, fine arts, science, antiquities, the drama, &c. (No. 17, Saturday, August 17, 1822, pp. 263-4) (q.v.).

Copy Notes Three copies were bought from James Duncan (late Ogle, Duncan & Co., bookseller & publisher) by James Moyes and sold to Soane on trade terms for 13s. 9d., receipted on 4 May 1824 by Thomas Rutherford. (Archive 16/12/6 and 16/12/72).
