Lysons, Samuel (1763--1819)
A collection of Gloucestershire antiquities. By Samuel Lysons, F.R.S. & F.A.S.
London (Place), printed for T. Cadell and W. Davies,, 1804.
[2], iv, 38, [4] p., etch. t.-pl., CX etch. hand-col. pl. ; 59.0 cm. (2°)

Originally issued in 15 parts between 1791 and 1803. Some copies which were made up from the original parts have the title-plate dated 1803 but otherwise identical to that above. An asterisk appears after the numbers of 23 plates which Upcott says were substituted for cancelled plates. According to Lowndes, 'A few copies were issued with coloured plates to match the Reliquae Britannico-Romanae, to which it forms a sequel ...' The Soane copy described here is a large paper copy with the plates hand-coloured. They were issued at 12 guineas, compared to 2 guineas for ordinary copies and 5 guineas for large paper. Pale blue frames are added around most of the hand-coloured plates giving them the appearance of mounted watercolours. The Soane copy has a slip laid down at the foot of the 'Errata' on the recto of the final letterpress leaf with an additional line of errata. For the publication history and a full description of an ordinary copy of the work, see BAL, Early printed books, no. 1983.

Binding C19th quarter red morocco-grained paper, marbled-paper boards, printed paper spine-label reading 'Lysons's / Gloucester-/ Shire / Antiquities.'.

Reference Number 4194
