First published in 1806. Eight of the landscape plates were also published separately in 1807 under the title Engravings, with descriptions, ... (q.v.). The theory of taste, advertised on the final leaf of vol. II, was never published. See notes to BAL, Early printed books, no. 1964 (1806 ed.).

Copy Notes The chapter on architecture in volume I (pp. 90--95), which contains derogatory comments on the Bank of England, is heavily and critically annotated by Soane; page 95 left untrimmed in the rebinding to preserve Soane's marginal annotations.

Binding C19th diced purple calf, gilt double-ruled borders and spine, dark green morocco spine-labels. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 11s. (and 6d. to place a plate), 27 January 1831. (Archive 7/15/8).
